US welcomes role and contributions of the OIC for Afghanistan

Dec 20, 2021: The United States (US) warmly welcomes the role and partnership of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

In a tweet, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West said that a positive meeting of the OIC was held which yielded important results.

“A productive OIC session today with important outcomes – not least the creation of a humanitarian trust fund and the naming of an OIC Special Envoy. The U.S. warmly welcomes the OIC’s role and contributions,” he tweeted.

His remarks came after the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting in Islamabad on Sunday. After the meeting, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi addressed a joint news conference with OIC Secretary General Hussain Brahm. Qureshi said that 437 delegations comprising of 70 delegations including 20 foreign ministers, 10 deputy foreign ministers from OIC member states, special envoys of P-5 countries and also from European countries.

The minister announced that the session established a “Humanitarian Trust Fund” which would serve as a vehicle to channel humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan including in partnership with other international actors.

Pledges would now be made into the Islamic Development Bank account,” Qureshi clarified when asked if there were any pledges made in terms of money to help assist the Afghans and avert the looming economic collapse of Afghanistan. He said that the countries are aware of the importance of the time.

In his address, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that Afghanistan could become the world’s biggest “humanitarian crisis” if the international community did not act now.

Praising the other presenters for highlighting the gravity of the situation in Afghanistan, he said: “If the world does not act, this will be the biggest man-made crisis we are facing.”
