Uzbek Lieutenant meets FM Shah Mehmood Qureshi

Uzbek Lieutenant General Viktor Makhmudov, who is reportedly on a visit to Pakistan, met with Foreign Minister (FM) Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

The Foreign Minister welcomed the distinguished guest on his visit to Pakistan.

According to sources, issues of mutual interest including bilateral relations, defense and military cooperation, and the emerging situation in Afghanistan were discussed during the meeting. FM, while talking to his Uzbek guest, said:

“Pakistan attaches special importance to bilateral relations with Uzbekistan. Bilateral relations between Pakistan and Uzbekistan are based on fraternal relations based on common religious, cultural and cultural values. Pakistan wants to transform long-standing relations with Uzbekistan into a strategic partnership.”

FM Qureshi also mentioned Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Tashkent on July 16/17, 2021 and meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirzayev, bilateral relations were further expanded. He added that the agreement on the establishment of a joint security commission between Pakistan and Uzbekistan would help further strengthen relations between the two countries.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi told the Uzbek lieutenant that the agreement would help prevent terrorism, drug trafficking and co-operate in disaster management.

Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi added that my meeting with the Uzbek Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the second ministerial meeting of Afghanistan’s close neighbors in Tehran was very fruitful. Pakistan and Uzbekistan have similar views on Afghanistan. The international community should help the Afghan people to deal with the humanitarian crisis.

Talking to the Uzbek general, Foreign Minister stated:

“Pakistan was focusing on its geo-economic priorities. Peace in Afghanistan would boost trade and economic ties with Central Asian states, inclusive of Pakistan and Uzbekistan, as Afghanistan’s closest neighbors, equally wanted peace in Afghanistan.”

The two Foreign Ministers pledged to activate existing defense and military co-operation agreements between Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
