LAHORE: Volunteers Leading Governance (VLG) has urged the public to ensure civic responsibility in regard to pollution, and smog in the country.

Taking to social networking platform X (formerly Twitter), the focal person for the VLG wrote: “Prevention is more effective than treatment.”

The post cautioned against the burning of garbage instead urging the public to plant and care for trees, and to keep cars in “good repair” to ensure civic responsibility amidst growing concerns of worsening AQI (Air Quality Index) and smog across the country, especially in Punjab, Pakistan.

The post comes hours after Ali Jan Khan, Secretary for the Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department of the Punjab Government, implemented Sections 4(c), 5(1)(e), and 5(1)(f) of the Punjab Infectious Diseases (Prevention and Control) Act 2020 restricting “movement” across multiple districts in Punjab including many areas of Lahore, the provincial capital.

According to a directive issued by the Punjab Government, the spread of Conjunctivitis, also known as Pink Eye, is on the rise due to bacterial or viral infection(s), smoke, dust, and/or chemical exposure and is posing a serious and “imminent threat” to public health coercing the government to take necessary safety measures for prevention and control of the disease.
