Some “liberals” are questioning the Army’s response, drawing comparisons to the U.S. government’s reaction to the events at Capitol Hill. A knowledgeable acquaintance raises a valid point asking whether Capitol Hill was a military installation and whether Trump supporters attacked any military or air force bases, the Pentagon, or the residence of any general. The synchronized attacks on May 9th across multiple cities indicate pre-planning, making it an unprecedented event not only in Pakistan but anywhere in the world. While protests have occurred in the past, they have never solely targeted the military.
Efforts appear to be underway to diminish Khan’s influence on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party post 9th May. The politics of confrontation, which formed the foundation of Khan’s stance even during his party’s time in power, had resulted in a dysfunctional governance process.

Even if the bar on contesting against Jehangir Tareen Khan under Article 62[1][f] remains in place, as there is little possibility of its removal, since Nawaz Sharif was also disqualified under the same law in 2017. Granting relief to Tareen would imply granting the same to Sharif. Nonetheless, Tareen enjoys good relations with political parties and has the support of a considerable number of MNAs and MPAs who defected from the PTI. He is likely to play a role in shaping the future of Pakistani politics.
Rumors also floating of a forward block of PTI to be formed soon & announcement may come just before or at heels of this piece being published.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are also benefiting from PTI parliamentarians defecting to their ranks. Chaudhry Shujaat too is poised to play a stronger political role.
Elections may take place sometime this year, possibly in October. It’s still a “may”. However, unless there is an internal cleansing within the parties infrastructure and the implementation of necessary changes by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), including the introduction of the None of the Above (NOTA) option, the same familiar faces are likely to return.
