After Dr. Geoffrey Hinton announced he was stepping down from his position at Google, having pioneered AI technology, the White House has been concerned about “AI risks”. 

According to a Washington Post (WP) report, the Biden administration is hosting an AI meeting with CEOs from leading tech companies including Google and its affiliate Anthropic, Microsoft, and Open AI as the White House hopes to “promote responsible AI development”.

In this regard, the White House is hoping to convene a meeting with the tech executives as President Joe Biden has cautioned companies to ensure artificial intelligence projects will be safe once they are released. On the occasion, Vice President Kamala Harris will also be in attendance. According to the WP, during the meeting on Thursday, the US administration is geared towards directing the executives to ensure safety alongside development. A senior administration official who wished to maintain anonymity confirmed the government’s agenda to the Washington Post.

On Thursday, the US govt announced it was investing in “trustworthy” AI development apart from voluntary commitments from major tech companies. In regard to this, the Office of Management and Budget will release a “draft guidance” of ways federal agencies could make use of AI systems.

On the one hand, AI’s “godfather” Geoffrey Hinton announced he was stepping down from his position over the rising “dangers” of AI, on the other hand, the US govt scheduled a meeting to contend with the threats and risks posed by the growing technological advancements facing progress in AI. In connection, is also the recent release and “overnight success” of Open AI’s ChatGPT. Speaking with WP, the senior official stated: “As new tools hit the market, the extraordinary opportunities that AI presents are coming more into focus”. The official added that while there is technological advancement, “we know there are some serious risks”. Elaborating on the subject, the official noted that the Biden government is concerned about the “broad set of risks” which may need to be tackled so as not to affect the institutions, as well as the jobs, and civil rights of US citizens.

It is pertinent to note, that the Biden administration is interested in investing in “responsible AI research and development” according to a Washington Post report, with a $140 million grant aiming to increase the number of AI research centers across the US which will be focused on research in the filed ranging from “public health to cybersecurity”. Moreover, the investment is but a fraction of billions already invested in private sector companies interested in advancing AI technology. One such company is Microsoft, which invested approximately $10 billion in Open AI.
