WHO to Evacuate Women and Children from Gaza for Urgent Medical Care

The World Health Organization (WHO) is working on evacuating approximately 1,000 women and children in Gaza, to Europe, for urgent medical care.
The Head of the WHO’s Europe chapter confirmed the evacuations will begin shortly. In an interview with AFP, Hans Kluge said that authorities are “committed to 1,000 more medical evacuations” within the next few months. Kluge added that the evacuations would be facilitated by WHO as well as European countries.

On Thursday, investigators in the US accused Israel of “crimes against humanity”. They said that Israel was targeting medical facilities in Gaza deliberately simultaneously, killing and torturing medical personnel in the region. Earlier in May, Rik Peeperkorn a WHO representative in Palestine said that nearly ten thousand people needed to be evacuated for “urgent” medical care.

Since October 2023, when Israel’s genocide in Gaza escalated, WHO has facilitated hundreds of evacuations from Gaza. Speaking with AFP, Kluge stressed that the evacuations could not be possible without dialogue. Mentioning the situation in Ukraine, he added, “I keep the dialogue (open) with all partners”. According to Kluge, the importance is to not politicize health because the “most important medicine is peace”. The Head of WHO Europe further commented that health care workers should be allowed to do their jobs in conflict zones.
