Why China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia Refused to Attend G20 Srinagar Meet | Baaghi TV

The longstanding border dispute between China and India, spanning over 3,440km (2,100 miles), has led to escalating tensions between the two nations. The recent construction of a high-altitude air base by India in the border region further intensified the conflict. The completion of the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi (DSDBO) road in Ladakh in 2019, after nearly 20 years of construction, significantly enhances India’s ability to mobilize both resources and personnel in the event of a conflict. In late 2022, the Tawang sector of the Arunachal Pradesh state witnessed a clash between the forces of both countries for the first time.

In 2021, China accused India of shooting at its troops, a claim which India vehemently denied. If true, this incident would mark the first violation of the agreement reached by both countries in 1996, which aimed to prevent the use of weapons near the border.

The G20 meeting scheduled in Srinagar in 2023 has been marred by controversy, as China and Saudi Arabia, along with Pakistan, have refused to participate. India intended to showcase the positive outcomes it claims to have achieved by revoking Article 370 and stripping away the special status of Occupied Kashmir in 2019. However, as DaShanne Stokes points out, “Those with unearned privileges often spin things as ‘political correctness’ to further silence those they wish to oppress.”

China, a close ally of Pakistan, does not want to attend a meeting it perceives as an attempt by India to legitimize what it considers the “illegal occupation” of Kashmir. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, prefers to avoid any controversy by abstaining from attending a summit held on disputed territory.

Turkey, known for its criticism of India’s policies towards Occupied Kashmir, joins China, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan in skipping the meeting. Egypt has also decided not to attend.

India’s decision to host the meeting in a disputed region can be seen as an attempt to bring diplomats from around the world to the negotiating table, fully aware that China, Pakistan, and Turkey are unlikely to attend due to their public stance on Occupied Kashmir.
