In the aftermath of the events that followed Imran Khan’s arrest, we witnessed a significant decline in civic sense among the public. People behaved recklessly, causing extensive damage. Public property, including ambulances, government buildings, police vans, and private properties, was destroyed. Disturbing videos circulated showing shops being broken into and looted.

While the right to peaceful protest is essential, it should not disrupt the routine lives of ordinary citizens. Unfortunately, the scale of destruction was alarmingly high. According to reports, “26 police vehicles were destroyed, 7 government buildings were ransacked, and 10 private properties were vandalized.” Shockingly, even Armed Forces properties became targets, including the Corps’ Commander House, which was once the residence of Pakistan’s founder, known as Jinnah House. The GHQ building in Rawalpindi was also attacked, and Askari Tower in Model Town Tehsil suffered severe damage. Tragically, ten lives were lost.

In another disgraceful incident, PTI protestors set fire to “The Little Dragon” plane at Mianwali Air Base, an aircraft associated with Air Commodore M.M Alam, who shot down six Indian planes in under one minute in 1965—a feat for which he was awarded the Sitara-e-Jurat. This act not only tarnished our national heritage but also fueled hatred against the Army.

If, God forbid, the Core Commander Lahore had responded to the protesters’ intrusion with physical force, the consequences could have been disastrous, possibly reminiscent of the events in 1971. It raises concerns about the thinking of our leaders.

On the other side of the coin, arresting individuals solely based on their associations with PTI may backfire, providing justification for those involved in supporting and participating in these destructive activities.

Each one of us must take stock of the current situation. Causing destruction proves nothing; it only reveals a society that supports and follows the law of the jungle. It shows that Pakistan is being overrun by individuals resembling the infamous character “Gullu Butt.”

Ultimately, it is up to each of us to make a choice. We can choose to practice and uphold civic sense or ignore it. We can choose to respect the law and maintain proper etiquette when interacting with others, or we can choose not to.
