According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA): “meaningful youth participation involves recognizing and nurturing the strengths, interests, and abilities of young people through the provision of real opportunities for them to become involved in decisions that affect them at individual and systemic levels.”

In Pakistan, it is crucial to utilize the potential of young individuals in various fields of governance. They bring creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, and the ability to address the current needs of the country.

Unfortunately, successive governments in Pakistan have continued to rely on the same policymakers who have struggled to bring about positive change in economic policies and address multidimensional social issues. Consequently, Pakistan is increasingly experiencing a brain drain, with its best talent being exported to other nations that harness their human resources to develop their economies.

With over 60% of Pakistan’s population below the age of 30, youth unemployment remains high. It is essential to harness their skills for the development of the economy. Additionally, there is a pressing need to provide the youth with the necessary skill sets to address the country’s current needs. Unfortunately, Pakistan is significantly lacking in both of these areas.

To combat the brain drain and make progress, Pakistan needs to prioritize technology and knowledge-based products. It should strive to develop technologically advanced sectors with specialized skills and a value-added approach.

The most crucial step in this process is to include young people in policy-making decisions that deal with various sectors. These young individuals should replace the outdated policymakers who have been around for decades and have failed to adapt to the changing times beyond the 1990s.

The challenge faced in Pakistan is to move away from outdated mindsets that have failed to develop institutions in a progressive manner. The practice of favoritism and appointing individuals with little or no knowledge of the related subject as heads of institutions and assignments need to be eliminated.

It is time to prioritize Pakistan and its future by involving young people in the governance of the country. By doing so, Pakistan can tap into the potential of its youth, address its pressing challenges, and foster sustainable development.
