World Peace: An Elusive Concept?
In his late 18th-century essay Perpetual Peace, philosopher Immanuel Kant outlined a visionary program for achieving lasting global peace. He proposed measures such as abolishing standing armies, stopping states from interfering in each other’s affairs, and ensuring national funds were not used to provoke conflicts.
Kant emphasized the importance of universal hospitality, where all individuals could enjoy the rights of global citizens. These principles, he argued, could lay the groundwork for enduring peace.

However, the feasibility of world peace is challenged by persistent regional and international conflicts. The existence of vested interests creates an inevitable “us versus them” mentality, driving nations toward potentially catastrophic clashes, especially given the proliferation of nuclear weapons, advanced lethal technologies, artificial intelligence, and chemical weapons.
Economic inequalities and resource scarcity have long been recognized as significant contributors to conflict. Addressing these issues is crucial for fostering global peace. The distribution of wealth and access to resources are pivotal in shaping the geopolitical landscape, influencing whether it tends toward stability or conflict.

Despite extensive discussions and efforts by governments, true peace seems elusive. Governments can only control violence within socially acceptable limits; genuine peace is a state of consciousness rather than a political condition. Increasingly, issues like climate change and economic disparities, which demand collective action, are instead fostering isolation and entrenchment among nations. The ambitious plans for global peace now appear outdated and unrealistic.
Consequently, achieving world peace may necessitate a more incremental approach, addressing conflicts one at a time. As grand designs for global harmony seem quaint, focusing on resolving individual disputes may be the more pragmatic path toward a peaceful world.
