Xiaomi trumps Apple in global smartphone market
Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi has managed to overtake American tech giant Apple in the second quarter of the year, standing at second place in the global smartphone market.
According to a report by an analyst firm, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi overtook Apple with a 17% share of global market shipments to sit at 2nd place, right behind Samsung. Apple was pushed to 3rd place, currently standing at a 14% share in the global market.
Reports state that Xiaomi’s market share rose by 83% in the second quarter of the year, overtaking Apple by 3%. According to Canalys’ research manager Ben Stanton, Xiaomi’s global business is increasing at a rapid pace, with statistics showing that their shipments had increased 300% each year in Latin America and 50% in Western Europe.
Samsung grew 15% in the period, making it the largest smartphone maker in the world, having a 19% overall global market share, 2% higher than Xiaomi. Apple’s growth, however, was only 1%.
Chinese company Oppo stands at number 4, with a 10% market share, and Vivo, another Chinese company ranks fifth, also having a 10% market share.
It is to be noted, however, that Xiaomi’s selling price is still valued 75% less than Apple’s selling prices, signifying that people in the global market still hold reservations about the brand as compared to Apple.
