YouTube, an American video-sharing and social media platform, known as the source of entertainment for millions across the globe, even surpassing mediums such as television, and radio in the last decade has expanded horizons for people hoping to make money while having fun.
How so? By offering “unique” jobs to content creators making engaging, witty, hilarious, or even academic content. In recent years, YouTube has far exceeded conventional television shows garnering millions of views. It is believed that YouTube will soon become an “all-encompassing” experience for its viewers allowing them to watch and interact with others, all at the same time with its quirky updates.
Prior to shifting under its parent company, Google, YouTube was originally founded by former PayPal employees who sold rights to the video-sharing platform in 2006, for nearly $1.65 billion. Today, some of the biggest media corporations in collaboration with YouTube under its Partnership Program offer content to viewers the world over.
According to Huffington Post, companies are finally recognizing the power of online media leading them to create their own YouTube channels. The last decade has seen many creators popularly known as “YouTubers” turn to the platform as their primary source of income.
With over a billion users, and over a million viewers per day between the ages of 18 to 49 in the United States alone, companies have been forced to accept YouTubers as “legitimate content creators”.
The website’s reach is as such that it is “breaking the law” if a YouTuber fails to inform their viewers that they are being paid to promote a product, according to Huffington Post.
Some popular Pakistani YouTubers include Rahim Pardesi, Shahveer Jaffrey, Zaid Ali T, Ducky Bhai, DhoomBros, Rameez Speaks, Shoaib Akhtar, and others. Meanwhile, other internationally recognized YouTubers include T-Series, Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes, SET India, PewDiePie, MrBeast, WWE, Like Nastya, Zee Music Company, Vlad and Niki, 5-Minute Crafts, and others according to Influencer Marketing Hub.
So then how can you make money through YouTube?
How to create content with YouTube?
A “lucrative career” is now possible in the world of social media and virtual reality with YouTube allowing you to monetize your account with a minimum of 1,000 subscribers but where to start?
Apart from the basics: having a camera and a good internet connection, you will also need to consider the following factors:
- Thinking outside the box
- Well-researched content
- Video editing skills
- A good knowledge base of the platform itself
According to a MediaKix survey nearly seventy-five percent of children between the ages of six and seventeen dream of becoming a YouTuber, with The Sun showing that at least three-quarters of GenZ and millennials want to have a career in YouTube content creation.
Meanwhile, ensuring the following steps will make it easy for you to have a successful YouTube career:
Choose a niche for yourself – something that makes your content stand out in comparison to the others. For instance, if you start a cooking channel, you could make it more specific such as “Vegetarian Cooking”, “Indian Cooking”, “Oil-Free Cooking”, or even “10-minute recipes”, and so on.
Understand your audience – this means you need to set a demographic for the audience you create content for. So first you must ask yourself these questions: Who is my content for? How old are they? What hobbies/interests do they have? Why will they watch my videos? And most importantly, at what time will my viewers be most active?
Once you are able to answer the above questions, you can create focused content.
Set a clear goal – why do want to create a YouTube channel? Do you want to become famous or do you want to create your own brand and provide services?
Remain consistent in content – Once you have finalized your niche and goals, it is time to take the next step and start creating content. But remember to be consistent. If you post one video in May and another in June, you will not be able to maintain your channel rating.
Schedule content – Once you have completed the above steps, turn to schedule content. Work on a plan for the week, plan for the month or even plan per four quarters of the year. But remain consistent. Not only will you be able to maintain your focus, but you will also be able to focus on the marketing aspect of your content.
You can also create a content calendar using software like Microsoft Excel, Trello, Google Sheets, or even Google Calender et cetera.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Simply creating and uploading videos will not work. You will also need to optimize your videos so that they appear in search engines or as “recommended videos” for your audiences.
Market content – The final step in content creation is to promote your content. Use social media platforms other than YouTube, which your target audience may be interested in.
Some other helpful tips would include being consistent, and patient, keeping yourself updated and learning newer techniques. How to make money with YouTube?
Monetize your account – Once your channel hits 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours, you can monetize your account by signing up for YouTube Partner and earning income from displaying ads on your videos.
You can make money if your viewer either watches an ad for a certain amount of time or clicks on it. On average, you can make up to $3 to $5 per 1,000 views.
Connect with Brands as an Influencer – if you have a good following on other social media platforms, you can easily carry forward the audience to YouTube, however, you can also choose to partner with a brand. For this, you can promote and/or review their products, run giveaways or mention the products and brands in your video to get either paid or receive free stuff from the brand.
Sell Products/’Merch’ – Some YouTubers sell their own products or services (merchandise/merch) or another business’ products as an affiliate. This not only helps you to make money but helps boost your brand awareness.
Crowdfunding – you can also go the crowdfunding route. As a YouTube content creator, this means allowing your audience to give you a monthly donation so you can keep creating content.
How much money can you make?
According to STACKOFTUFTS, content creators in Pakistan can make between 100,000 to 130,000 PKR per year this means that on average, a content creator makes $18 per 1,000 ad views.
Referencing the popular YouTube channel, Kitchen with Amna, they say that with approximately 3.53 million subscribers, Amna made $442,000 in August 2021. Meanwhile, Food Fusion (Pakistan’s most viewed food channel), had a net worth of $1.8 million in August 2022.
In many ways, creating a YouTube channel is very easy but it is also a project that demands patience and time, to begin with, you can start with YouTube as a side hustle instead of your primary job and remain consistent to savor the fruit of your efforts. “It just really humbles you working on a product that reaches so many and has the potential to reach so many new people for the first time”, Sarah, Product Manager at YouTube Jobs.
YouTube truly is a unique platform with a little something for everyone from mukbang to cooking, to family videos, to something for the kids, to gaming videos, make-up videos, and even DIY/crafts videos.
