The 128-year-old Chaulkhowa Jama Masjid in Dibrugarh was demolished on Monday by the district administration to facilitate a four-lane road expansion project aimed at improving the area’s drainage system and mitigating recurring urban floods.
Officials stated that the demolition was conducted after following due land acquisition procedures.
“As per the land acquisition process, compensation will be provided to the affected parties. The demolition of a portion of the mosque was necessary for the four-lane expansion,” said a district official.
The project involves upgrading the drainage system from Bokul to Sessa Bridge—an area often plagued by artificial flooding during the monsoon.
A JCB excavator was deployed for the demolition, which included the removal of the mosque’s tomb structure.
“The local community extended their cooperation, understanding that the expansion is essential to address both traffic needs and flood mitigation,” the official added.
