Dec 17, 2021: According to a report by the News group, Punjab Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Raja Basharat told an assembly session that the police had formally registered a case against 52 suspects for their involvement in the Sialkot lynching incident.

The minister assured the assembly members of the recent progress in the investigation into the lynching of a Sri Lankan factory manager on December 3 and said that 182 people have been arrested so far during the investigation. He said that 120 suspects are currently in the custody of the police for investigation out of which 18 are on physical remand while 62 others have been released due to lack of evidence against them.

In his address to the House, Basharat demanded severe punishment for the perpetrators of this heinous murder and promised to file a challan within 30 days. He urged everyone to come up with responsible suggestions, saying that this is a very sensitive issue. Basharat added that the Prime Minister discussed the issue in the Senate and National Assembly and strongly condemned the incident. He also appreciated the role of Punjab Police in this regard and said that immediate action was taken by the police and the accused were arrested immediately.

He said the Islamic Ideological Council (CII) and other bodies were also working on the issue and their recommendations would be made part of the law.

On December 3 this year, a Diyawadana Priyantha, working as a manager at a private factory in Sialkot, was lynched by a mob after being accused of blasphemy.

Prime Minister Imran Khan called the horrific incident a “day of shame for Pakistan”.

Garment industry workers on Wazirabad Road in Sialkot had alleged that the foreigner had committed blasphemy. He was then beaten and his body set on fire. According to police, the angry mob also vandalized the factory and blocked traffic. The brutal assassination was widely condemned by top government officials, including the prime minister and president, as well as the military’s top leadership, who promised to bring all those involved to justice.
