Lahore, 11th May: The United States has finally authorized the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for children aged between 12 and 15 years.
According to reports, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Monday that the Pfizer-BioNTtech COVID vaccine is now safe to be used for kids aged between 12 and 15.
Earlier, FDA granted an emergency use authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for kids aged 16 and above.
Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research said that authorizing the COVID vaccine for a younger population is a critical step in order to decrease the health burden.
FDA informed that around 1.5 million COVID-19 cases in children aged 11 to 17 years old have been reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between March 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021.
It has also been reported that the infection is generally milder in children but they can pass it to more vulnerable adults.
Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech informed last month in March their two-dose vaccine has been proven safe and effective in a trial of 12 to 15-year-old children.
