US-Canada Border likely to enter phased reopening?
An official announcement of the opening of the border between the United States (US) and Canada is expected at some point. The nearly 9,000-kilometer-long border, which has 117 official crossings, was closed for unnecessary travel after a global outbreak of the coronavirus in March last year.
According to details, the closure of the world’s longest border has been extended every month, with its current term ending on Monday. About 400,000 people crossed the border every day before the outbreak began, and a daily trade of $2 billion was done across the border.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has indicated that the opening of the border will be gradual and will depend on sanctions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Kelley Lee, a professor of global health at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, says she believes people crossing the border for non-essential purposes will be categorized into four categories. She said the categories would probably be based on the coronavirus vaccine.

For example, the first category would be people who have completed vaccine doses. The second category will include people who have had a dose of the vaccine. Another category will be for people who have not been vaccinated at all, while the fourth category will be for people who have had a coronary heart disease and have developed antibodies in their body.
Lee says a vaccine passport can be an easy way to find out a traveler’s category, but some people object.
Furthermore, she thinks that a vaccine passport is a better way to allow travel across the border, as it will determine which person’s arrival poses a risk or not because of which passenger’s entry. This can, however, be a bit dangerous and which tourist is allowed to be prepared for the potential threat of the virus.

Goldy Hyder, president of the Business Council of Canada, says the more people get vaccinated, the more pressure the government will have to allow travel. He said that change was taking place in Canada and that people were moving from fear to hope and now they want to know what are the benefits of completing vaccine doses.
The government may be hesitant at first, but I think it will soon realize that it needs to make rapid progress to restore order, Goldy added.
According to him, this will send a different message because some people consider it their basic right to get vaccinated or not. They can treat vaccine passports as prejudice and discrimination.
Goldy says the reason for not getting vaccinated could be scientific, medical or religious. Therefore, if a person has a reasonable justification, he cannot be punished for not getting vaccinated.

Walt Judas, CEO of the British Columbia Tourism Industry Association, says opening the border in any way is welcome. He said that with the renewal of the closure every month, many businesses have closed or are running on aid. People can’t plan their businesses in uncertainty. Many businesses rely on international tourism. Prolonged shutdowns will severely damage the tourism industry.
As of June 11, 77% of adults in Canada had received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to official figures. In the US, 31 million doses of the vaccine have been given and more than 45% of the population has completed the vaccine course.
