Narendra Modi listed as ‘predator of press freedom’

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has joined the list of 37 heads of state or governments who have been identified by the international organization ‘Reporters Without Borders (RSF)’ as press freedom controllers (predators).
The entry reveals how the media’s close ties to billionaire businessmen, who own vast vast empires, helped spread their nationalist-populist ideology through their extremely divisive and relentless coverage of insulting speeches.
India is ranked 142 out of 180 countries in the RSF’s 2021 World Press Freedom Index.

The list includes Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Myanmar’s coup leader Min Aung Hlaing, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
This is the first time since 2016 that the RSF has published such a list. Seventeen of the leaders known as ‘Predators’ are newcomers while 13 of the 37 on the list are from Asia Pacific. The list features two women leaders: Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, and Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong.

Seven world leaders on the list have been part of it since its first publication in 2001 which includes Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Iran’s Ali Khamenei, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Belarus’s Alexander Lukashenko.
According to the press release, RSF has compiled a file for each Predator identifying their ‘Predator Method’. The list also sheds light on how every ‘predator’ censors and harasses journalists. At the same time, what kind of journalist and media outlet do they like, as well as the speeches or interviews in which they justify their violent behavior.
