38 people have been killed in the past 24 hours by lightning strikes in India.
According to the foreign news agency AP, police have said that most of the deaths due to the lightning occurred in the western state of Rajasthan, where 11 people were killed in a strike near the watchtower of the 12th-century Amer Fort.
Senior police officer Anand Srivastava said some of the dead were taking selfies near the watchtower when the lightning struck.
He said that nine more people were killed and about 20 injured in separate lightning strikes in the state which was facing heavy thunderstorms and monsoon rains these days.
A lightning strike in Uttar Pradesh killed 18 people, Government Official Manoj Dixit said. Most of those killed were farmworkers.
The governments of the two states announced financial assistance for the families of the dead and the victims of the injured.
The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of more lightning in the next two days.
It should be noted that lightning strikes are common in India during monsoon rains from June to September.
In 2019, more than 2,900 people were killed in lightning strikes in India.
