July 25, 2021: Police have arrested the parents of Zahir Jaffer, the man accused of killing and beheading Noor Mukaddam, daughter of former Pakistani ambassador to South Korea Shaukat Mukaddam.

This was disclosed by Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Hamza Shafqat in a statement issued early on Sunday. Zahir Jaffar’s parents were arrested for trying to hide evidence, he said.

Taking to Twitter, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad confirmed the news and wrote: “Sealing orders of Therapy works issued. Parents of Murderer Zahir Jaffar also arrested.”

The arrest came hours after the accused was produced in court. The assassination and beheading of Noor Mukaddam has sparked outrage across Pakistan, with thousands calling on authorities to bring the case to justice. An autopsy report on Noor Makdam was released on Friday stating that he had been beheaded after being killed in Islamabad.

According to sources, the accused had planned the crime and had taken some of his friends into confidence in connection with the plot a few days before the incident. The accused called Noor Mukaddam to the residence on July 20 and asked her to hang out. When her parents could not contact her, they started asking her friends about her whereabouts. When some of Noor’s friends went to Jafar’s residence to inquire about the deceased, he denied seeing her. Sources told police that after that, Noor’s friends fought with Jaffar.

After brutally killing Noor, the accused tried to escape but was arrested on time. It should be noted that Jaffer had earlier been deported from the UK for attacking a woman.

Earlier, Noor Mukaddam’s father addressed a press conference and thanked the Prime Minister, Shahbaz Gul, and Mazari for taking a personal interest in the matter. This is not a case where the accused escaped. He was caught with a weapon, ”said Mukaddam.

He said that Jaffer is “not a person with a mental disability”. He added, “If such a person was employed as the director of a company, then his parents, too, must be made part of the investigation,” Mukadam had demanded.

“My daughter was a very sweet and kind-hearted girl. Our family has been crying badly since [her murder],” he said.

Mukaddam said that he has served the country as an ambassador and only seeks justice.

“This is a clear-cut case. The killer is standing right before us,” he said. The former diplomat said that the murder was “witnessed by the gatekeeper” of the house.

The family of Zahir meanwhile, is working to build a plea of insanity to let their son off the hook for committing the heinous crime. To this end, a report issued by the Pakistan Psychiatric Society makes various recommendations in a clear attempt to undermine the justice process.

The report attempts to build a case for Zahir Jaffer’s status as mentally unstable and glosses over the allegations of substance abuse by Jaffer and instead says; “It is important to remember that the vast majority of people with mental health issues do not commit crimes” The report cites international research studies to build this theory.

The report further states that it is “essential that this terrible crime is not allowed to add to the already enormous stigma faced by patients with mental illness and their families in Pakistan.” The report states the state instead needs to take better care of such individuals.

In a further blatant attempt to redirect public attention from the brutal murder of Noor Mukaddam for which Zahir Jaffer is in custody, the report seeks to “direct all media (including print, broadcast and digital media) through their regulatory bodies such as PEMRA to avoid sensationalizing this tragic incident as this can lead to ‘secondary’ trauma for viewers and worsen existing mental health problems for those already suffering”
