Prime Minister Imran Khan’s PTI triumphs in AJK polls

July 25, 2021: In Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), polling for the 45 general seats began on Sunday morning when the clock struck eight o’clock and volunteers from political parties set up camp near the polling stations.

The election campaign of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), which was closely watched on Friday, was hotly debated. Considered to be a fruitful moment for the state, polling is taking place amid widespread security. More than 700 candidates from 32 political and religious parties are vying for 45 general seats.

Of the remaining eight reserved seats, five are for women and three are for religious scholars, technocrats and Kashmiris abroad. Members of these seats are nominated after the election.

Of the 45 general seats, 12 seats are reserved for Kashmiri refugees who had migrated from the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) in 1947 and 1965 and are settled in various parts of Pakistan.

Therefore, elections in AJK will be held in only 33 seats in 10 districts. Polling is underway amid tight security amid concerns raised by political parties. About 40,000 security personnel have been assigned to protect 5,123 polling stations, of which 1,209 have been declared “sensitive” and 826 “extremely sensitive”.

Accordingly, the AJK government has given magisterial powers to 250 officers in addition to regular magistrates and presiding officers to maintain law and order on polling day.

All major political parties are participating. However, the battle is triangular as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) are the strongest parties, followed by the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference. (AJKMC) and Jammu. And Kashmir People’s Party (JKP).
