Ahmadullah Wasiq, deputy head of the Taliban’s cultural commission, has said that women will not be allowed to play any sport, including cricket, without covering their bodies and faces.
Talking to Australian media, the Taliban leader said that women’s participation in sports was neither appropriate nor necessary and would not violate Islamic values.
Ahmadullah Wasiq, deputy head of the Afghan Cultural Commission, said that he did not think women should be allowed to play cricket because, in cricket, women face a situation where their bodies and faces are not appropriately covered, which is un-Islamic. “It is against religious teachings,” he said.
Taliban ban Afghan women’s cricket team
The Taliban leader further said that this is the age of media and everyone sees pictures and videos, and as such, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will not allow women to play any sport in which the body of women is made prominent.
This matter of women not being allowed to play has become a source of great concern to international communities, including the International Cricket Council (ICC). Furthermore, in a reaction to this ban, Australia has announced that it won’t host Afghanistan’s men’s team for the upcoming Test match unless women are also allowed to play.
It may be recalled that the Taliban had announced the interim government of Afghanistan two days ago in which Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund was appointed as the Prime Minister of Afghanistan while Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Maulvi Abdul Salam Hanafi were appointed as the Deputy Prime Ministers.
The interim government announced by the Taliban did not include any women, which was a matter of concern to the European Union and other European countries.
