A Gol Transportes Aereos 737-800, scheduled to fly from Juazeiro Do Norte (JDO) to Sao Paulo (GRU), was diverted to Petrolina after the plane suffered an engine shutdown within 40 minutes of departure.

According to the details, Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes aircraft registration PR-GXM performing flight G3-1875 with 182 people on board, was climbing through FL230 out of Juazeiro Do Norte when the crew reported the right hand engine (CFM56) had failed and proceeded to shut the engine down.

The first 15 minutes of the Sao Paulo-bound flight passed normally, until engine number 2 of the aircraft failed. The crew chose to turn off the engine, located on the right side of the aircraft, and detoured (altered) the route to Petrolina, in Pernambuco.

The aircraft subsequently diverted to Petrolina (Brazil) for a safe landing about 35 minutes after departure. The aircraft is still on the ground in Petrolina about 21 hours after landing.

According to AvHerald, the takeoff was smooth until 23,300 feet, when the pilots noticed issues with the right-hand engine.

The engine used in Gol’s Boeing 737-800 is the CFM56 model, one of the most used in the market, manufactured by Safran Aircraft Engines, formerly known as Snecma, of France and by General Electric (GE) Aviation of the United States (US).

Modern aircraft are capable of flying safely with only one engine, with diversions being fairly common when snags occur. However, it wasn’t all good news for the passengers onboard.
