British Airways Boeing 777 Door Ripped Off in Cape Town

Door L1 of a British Airways Boeing 777-200, registration G-YMMH, was ripped off the jetway due to apparent coordination problems. The incident occurred on the afternoon of January 26, 2022, at Cape Town International Airport (CPT), South Africa. The aircraft was about to fly BA58 to London Heathrow Airport (LHR), but for obvious reasons the flight was cancelled.

According to the first reports, the aircraft was stopped in a position directly at the terminal. The British Airways 777 was connected to the jetway with the door open. At some point, a lack of coordination caused a driver of the towed truck to start the push back, pushing the plane backwards.

Consequently, the door was torn from the 777’s fuselage by the telescopic walkway. In various photos shared on social networks, the door of the front galley can be seen, it was recovered and placed at the boarding gate.

With one less gate, the British Airways 777 had to go back to the gate and disembark passengers. Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident.

According to information from FlightRadar24, the flight appears to have been “consolidated” with BA42, which was scheduled to depart at 21:02 (LT). The Boeing 777-200ER took off from the South African airport tonight and has an estimated arrival time of 06:26 (LT).

This case is reminiscent of the incident suffered by an Emirates Boeing 777-300ER registration A6-ENN where the L1 door was also almost ripped off. According to official airport sources, the mishap occurred after the jetway’s automatic elevation sensor failed, causing it to suddenly increase in height.

A British Airways spokesperson commented on the incident while talking to Simple Flying: “We have apologised to our customers for the slight delay to their departure from Cape Town due to an issue with the original aircraft. Our customers continued safely on their way to London on an alternative service.”
