The United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed a resolution against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to reports, the UN General Assembly resolution condemns Russia’s attack on Ukraine, calling for immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.

In the General Assembly session, 141 of the 193 member states voted in favor of the resolution, while five countries namely Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria, and Eritrea – voted against it. During the voting, 35 countries, including Pakistan, abstained and expressed neutrality on the issue.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, has expressed deep concern over the Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying that the Russia-Ukraine conflict shows the failure of diplomacy. According to Akram, talks are needed to reduce tensions. The Pakistani diplomat expressed hope that diplomacy could help to avert military conflict, the principle of equal protection for all must be upheld, these principles must be universally accepted.

Ahead of the vote, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, said Russia had taken away Ukraine’s right to be present. On the other hand, Russian Ambassador Vasily Alekseevich Nebenzya said that Russia wants to resolve the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine.

It is pertinent to note that this is the first emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly since 1997. Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that if World War III broke out, it would be fought with nuclear weapons and would be more destructive. Lavrov, in a recorded video address to a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, warned that a third world war could break out.

Australia’s announcement concerning the supply of nuclear weapons to Ukraine was followed by Sergei Lavrov, threatening a ‘real threat’.

The Russian Foreign Minister added that he was ready to face any sanctions imposed by the West. However, it is hoped that Russian athletes, journalists, and correspondents will not be targeted. Moreover, Lavrov defended the attack in Ukraine and called the military aggression a special military operation, saying allegations of human rights abuses were baseless.

It is the seventh day of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Western countries have imposed sanctions on Russian banks, companies, businesses, and institutions including on President Putin. Meanwhile, Russian forces have entered another major city, Kharkiv.
