Today, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) is scheduled to address a plea requesting the suspension of the three-year sentence given to Imran Khan, the founder of PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) and former Prime Minister, in the Toshakhana criminal case.
In a session on Wednesday, the Supreme Court indicated the presence of potential “procedural flaws” in Imran Khan’s conviction as ruled by the trial court in the Toshakhana reference case. The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, commented that the initial judgment from the additional sessions judge seems to have certain weaknesses. However, he mentioned that the apex court would refrain from immediate intervention and instead await the high court’s decision.
A two-judge bench from the IHC, led by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, will be presiding over the plea against Imran Khan’s conviction today. The IHC had previously postponed the hearing on August 22, following a request from the Election Commission of Pakistan’s lawyer for more time to prepare arguments.
During today’s hearing at the IHC, the lawyer representing the Election Commission of Pakistan will present arguments against the suspension of the former prime minister’s conviction.
The Supreme Court is set to convene at 2:00 pm today to address the Toshakhana case, following the proceedings in the Islamabad High Court. The three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and including Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, will oversee the hearing.
