Tehran (7th Jan, 2020): Large number of mourners turn out to pay last respects for burial of Iranian general Qassem Suleimani. 

According to reports of Baaghi TV, Estimated in millions, Iranians have been returning to their hometown to pay last respects for General Suleimani, ahead of his burial. Reports confirm that the body of the late general has been transported to his hometown of Kerman, where he will be laid to rest on Tuesday.

General Suleimani was assassinated in a US airstrike on Baghdad’s International Airport on Friday, on the orders of the United States President, Donald Trump. It is to be noted that following the assassination there has been an escalation in tensions between Iran and the US. The killing of one of Iran’s most powerful men has brought long-standing fears of conflict between the two states to the forefront with Iran’s Supreme Leader promising “severe” consequences.

The late general was widely considered to be the second most powerful man in Iran preceded only by their leader, Khamenei. In the aftermath of the US drone attack, general Suleimani has been labelled as a terrorist by the US administration who claim that Suleimani was a threat to the safety of US citizens in the region. In addition, according to reports of Tasnim news agency, Iranian parliamentarians have approved a motion to designate the US Army and Pentagon as terrorist organizations for the murder of general Suleimani.

The funeral prayers held in Kerman, was attended by Iranians in large numbers with people praising Suleimani as a “great man who was ready to serve his people”. According to reports, Ayatullah Khamenei led the funeral prayers for the outstanding general and reportedly weeped over the coffin. A student who attended the funeral prayers has stated that Suleimani must “certainly be avenged”.
