Aug 23, 2021: An Afghan security guard was killed in an exchange of fire between unidentified gunmen and Afghan forces at the northern gate of Kabul airport, the German military said.

The German military said on Twitter that three more people had been injured in Monday morning’s gun battle, including German and US forces.

The airport has been in chaos since the Taliban took control of the Afghan capital on the 15th of August as US and international forces try to evacuate civilians and vulnerable Afghans.

At least 20 people have been killed in and around the Afghan capital’s airport in the past week, a NATO official has said.

US President Joe Biden has said that a “hard and painful” plane carrying Americans and tens of thousands of people from the Afghan capital is moving fast, but he did so by the August 31 deadline set before the Taliban’s swift take over.

A Taliban official told Reuters that foreign forces in Afghanistan had not sought to extend the August 31 deadline for leaving the country.

A top government spokesman says Japan will send a military plane to Afghanistan on Monday to repatriate its citizens. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato told a news conference that more military transport planes are expected to be sent to Afghanistan, repatriating not only its citizens but also Afghans working in Japanese embassies or Japanese missions.

A charter flight landed at a Belgian airport outside Brussels, with 193 people on board, escaping from Kabul. Air Belgium jets brought the escapees – including Belgians and Afghans who worked for international missions – from a base in Islamabad that served as a staging post for a Belgian military plane from the Afghan capital.
