Iran Urges Japan to Release its Frozen Assets

The President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, has called on Japan to release Iranian funds frozen in the country due to US sanctions.

According to Reuters, this news was broadcast by the Iranian state broadcaster after the Iranian president met with the Japanese foreign minister.

It should be noted that due to US sanctions, Iran has failed to secure its assets from its oil and gas exports, including the $3 billion in Japanese funds in its banking and energy sectors.

The sanctions were imposed in 2018 by Washington following the termination of Iran’s nuclear deal with six world powers in 2015.

In a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshi Mitsuo Motegi, who arrived in Tehran on a two-day visit, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said, “Improving relations with Japan is very important for Iran, and Iranian assets in Japanese banks must be released. I don’t think any delay is permissible.”

According to Iranian state media, Ebrahim Raisi told the Japanese foreign minister that “Iran has no problem with negotiations. What is the justification for maintaining US sanctions against Iran?”

Iran and six world powers have been negotiating a nuclear deal since April, under which Tehran agreed to suspend its nuclear program in exchange for relief from sanctions.

However, Iranian and Western officials say there is still a long way to go to restore the agreement.

In addition, two days after the victory of conservative leader Ebrahim Raisi in Iran’s presidential election, the sixth round of talks between Tehran and Washington in Vienna on June 20 was postponed.

Iran and the six world powers have not yet announced when they will resume talks.

According to people familiar with the matter, Ebrahim Raisi, who has presented his cabinet to parliament for a vote of confidence, is expected to adopt a “tough” approach in the Vienna talks.

Like Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ebrahim Raeisi has backed nuclear talks in Vienna.

In 2019, Ayatollah Khamenei refused to respond to a message from the then-US President Donald Trump from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The Prime Minister of Japan had paid a visit to the Gulf of Oman in the wake of attacks on tankers as part of peace efforts. One of the tankers attacked was from Japan.
