Taliban fighters celebrate US withdrawal with gunfire

Aug 16, 2021: China’s media mocked the US withdrawal in Afghanistan, saying the Taliban takeover was ‘more smooth than the presidential transition in the US’.

The opinion was tweeted out on August 15 by Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the Global Times, a state-affiliated media outlet in China.

Chinese netizens made similar posts on China’s twitter like Weibu, saying that the Taliban’s occupation was “peaceful” compared to the January 6 riots in the US capital when pro-Trump mobs surrounded the capital, besieged the building, vandalized it and damaged property and forced it in to lockdown.

“What a joke. In Kabul today, the new government takeover was even more stable than when the US changed presidents,” wrote a Weibo user named Chen Zhen.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left Afghanistan for Tajikistan August 15 and opened his presidential palace to Taliban fighters entering Kabul. On Sunday, militants were seen inside the presidential palace, attackers holding weapons and standing behind tables.

Ghani, who became president in 2014, said in a Facebook post that he “thought it best to go out” to avoid a “flood of blood” in the Afghan capital and its largest city, Kabul.

With the complete withdrawal of US troops and the withdrawal of US diplomats, the Taliban are now in a position to formally seize power in the country and declare it the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

On the other hand, Abdul Haq Azad, press secretary at the Afghan embassy in India, said the embassy’s Twitter handle appeared to have been hacked. He tweeted, “I lost access to AfghanistanInIN’s Twitter handle, a friend sent a screenshot of this tweet, (this tweet is hidden from me.) I tried to log in but could not access. “

A tweet criticizing Ashraf Ghani, who resigned as president and fled the country as soon as the Taliban took control – was posted from the embassy’s handle.

Unusual activity was detected on the Afghan embassy’s Twitter account The Taliban entered the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Sunday morning.

When the Taliban closed in Kabul on Sunday, President Ashraf Ghani resigned and fled the country. Senior US military officials say Kabul International Airport has been closed to commercial flights, according to The Associated Press.
