Aug 2, 2021: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has blamed the current deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan on the United States, which has decided to withdraw its troops “abruptly”.
Presenting his security plan to parliament on Monday, Ghani said the situation in the war-torn Afghanistan would be “brought under control” within six months, adding that the United States had pledged its full support.
“The reason for our current situation is that this decision was taken suddenly,” he told the Afghanistan parliament. He said he had warned the US that the decision would have “consequences”.
The Afghan president added that “protecting the people” is a duty he will fulfill.
Following his address, the two houses of parliament issued a joint statement expressing full support for Ghani’s security plan. In a statement, lawmakers announced their “strong” support for human and women’s rights and freedom of expression, saying they stand with the Afghan National Army, “who sacrifice their lives for the nation.”
In response, the Taliban group issued a statement to the media, calling Ghani’s remarks “nonsense” and saying “his time is up”.
The statement said, “He was trying to overcome his bad mental state and mistakes. The nation has decided to prosecute the national traitors and bring them to justice. Declaring war, making accusations and providing false information cannot prolong Ghani’s life. “His time is up, God willing.”
For months, the Taliban’s rapid regional gains in the final stages of the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan have been largely in sparsely populated rural areas.
But in recent weeks, it has put increasing pressure on provincial capitals and seized key border crossings. Capturing any of Afghanistan’s major urban center would take their current aggression to another level and raise fears that the military is unable to counter the Taliban’s advance.
The Afghanistan government has dismissed the group’s continued successes over the summer as a lack of strategic value, but has itself largely failed to improve its pace on the battlefield.
