Afghanistan peace: Pak, US National Security Advisors agree to cooperate
July 30, 2021: NSA Dr. Moeed Yousaf and US NSA Jack Sullivan discussed bilateral issues, particularly Afghanistan peace during a meeting in Washington on Thursday.
National Security Adviser (NSA) Dr. Moeed Yousaf and his US counterpart Jack Sullivan discussed the “urgent need to reduce violence in Afghanistan” and discussed bilateral issues, particularly Afghanistan peace during a meeting in Washington on Thursday.
The two NSAs agreed to maintain the pace of cooperation. As part of Pakistan’s efforts to restore critical relations with Washington, the NSA left for the United States on July 26 on an important visit. During the official visit, DG ISI Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed also accompanied the NSA.
This was their second meeting since Geneva in May, where Moeed shared Pakistan’s “blueprint” for broader cooperation with the United States.
In a tweet, Moeed said he had a positive follow-up meeting with Sullivan and reviewed developments since the Geneva meeting and discussed bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.
Had a positive follow-up meeting with NSA @JakeSullivan46 today in Washington. Took stock of progress made since our Geneva meeting & discussed bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest. Agreed to sustain the momentum in Pak-US bilateral cooperation.

Sullivan remarked that during the meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, the need for a “political dialogue on the conflict” in Afghanistan was also discussed on regional connectivity and other areas of security and mutual cooperation.
Insecurity has been growing in Afghanistan in recent weeks, largely through fighting in its provinces as US-led foreign troops complete evacuations and the Taliban launches major operations in districts and border crossings.
I met with Pakistan’s NSA today to consult on regional connectivity and security, and other areas of mutual cooperation. We discussed the urgent need for a reduction in violence in Afghanistan and a negotiated political settlement to the conflict.

Earlier, a senior US general said the Taliban controlled half of Afghanistan’s district centers, indicating a rapidly deteriorating security situation.
The NSA visit was part of high-level bilateral engagements between the two countries, with a consensus reached between them about Afghanistan peace at their last meeting in Geneva.
Relations between Pakistan and the United States have remained cordial, but Islamabad is pushing for a relationship that transcends security and Afghanistan peace.
However, the US administration has not yet responded positively to Pakistan’s efforts as President Biden has not even spoken to Prime Minister Imran Khan.
