Afghanistan to Import 100 Megawatts of Electricity from Iran

Officials from Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) said they have signed an agreement with Iran to import 100 megawatts of electricity to Afghanistan.

According to the officials, the imported electricity will be distributed in Herat, Farah and Nimroz provinces and it is aimed to solve the electricity shortage problem the people face in these provinces.

“We buy 100 megawatts of electricity from Iran, which reaches Herat, Farah and Nimroz provinces,” said DABS spokesman Hekmatullah Noorzai.

A number of residents said they are concerned about the lack of electricity in the capital and provinces, especially during the winter. According to them, they face electricity outages in the winter and urged DABS to address the problem.

“Electricity always cuts out and sometimes it very weak,” said Sayed Mohammad, a resident of Herat province.

“In winter, compared to other times, there is a dire need for electricity so that people solve their problems with it,” said Nisar Ahmad Mohammadi, a resident of Nimroz province.

A number of residents in the capital also said they are worried about the shortages of electricity but asked the Islamic Emirate to provide electricity in a sustainable way.

“In the winter season the outages of electricity increase, and wood and coal are expensive in this season. People face many problems,” said Mohammad Jan, a resident of Kabul.

Earlier, DABS officials said that the country needs 850 megawatts of electricity per year, and 620 megawatts are imported from neighboring countries and 230 megawatts is supplied from domestic sources.
