Alarm bells ring over infections in Europe
The World Health Organization (WHO) says the number of infections in Europe has risen sharply in recent months and that unless more is done to stop the spread, the number of infected people in many countries could reach alarming levels.
The total number of cases in 30 European countries has increased over the past two weeks, said Hans Kluge, WHO’s regional director for Europe.
He said that in 11 of these countries, transmission has increased alarmingly and if left unchecked, health systems in Europe would be on the brink again.
The German state of North Rhine-Westphalia has re-imposed curfews in two districts following an outbreak at a meat processing plant, while workers in orchards in the northeastern Spanish province of Aragon have been hit by the virus. Restrictions are being imposed again.
The WHO Director commended these countries for their swift and targeted intervention and for stopping the local spikes in Poland and Israel.

Over 2.5 million cases have been reported from Europe. While the European Region is reporting a decreasing proportion of global cases than earlier in the year, the Region continues to report close to 20,000 new cases and over 700 new deaths daily. –@hans_kluge
