Amazon's Lord of the Rings trailer divides fans

A new one-minute trailer for Amazon Prime’s upcoming ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ series has been uploaded to the platforms’ YouTube channels, revealing the vast world of the new show and giving viewers a glimpse at several of the main characters. However, the trailer received its fair share of criticism.

Ever since the details of the first series surfaced, many fans have been outraged by cast choices and significant changes to Tolkien’s lore that they believe were only made to cater to modern sensibilities and bring progressive multicultural messages to the established world of the Middle Ages.

While the new trailer has already amassed over six million views at the time of the writing, the like/dislike ratio is probably not what Amazon wants to see ahead of the show, which costs nearly half a billion dollars to produce: 49,000 likes and 15,000 dislikes to the main Prime Video channel and even split into regional channels like Prime Video UK with 9.3k likes versus 9.7k dislikes.

The comment section also does not benefit the show, as the vast majority of posts are a copied quote from Tolkien in various languages that reads: “Evil cannot create anything new, it can only spoil or destroy what good forces have invented or made.”

While this quote is not quite verbatim what Tolkien said, it appears to be reflective of the opinion of many fans of Tolkien’s work who have expressed their contempt for the Amazon’s supposed disrespect for the source material.

While many said that their expectations for the adaptation were already quite low, the launch of official trailer only made matters worse.

Meanwhile, a number of media outlets have defended the show, calling any critics of the show racist bigots and “anonymous trolls”, bringing to mind the failed marketing strategies of the new Star Wars, 2016’s Ghostbusters, and other recent adaptations that have been blamed on fans for dislike of their new politically correct directions.
