Sept 26, 2021: Several people have been killed in the United States after an Amtrak train derailed in Montana, according to an official.

At least three people were killed in Saturday’s incident, according to a statement made to the Associated Press by the Liberty Country Sheriff’s Office Dispatcher, Starr Tyler.

She shared no further details about the incident.

Amtrak said they were “deeply saddened” by the deaths, adding that several had been injured. They said the Empire Builder train had about 147 passengers and 13 crew on board when five cars derailed near the town of Joplin at 4:00 pm (22:00 GMT).

Amtrak is working with local authorities to evacuate the injured passengers and evacuate all other passengers safely. The cause of Saturday’s incident was not immediately clear. The train was traveling from Chicago to the western city of Seattle, US media reported. In the pictures posted on social media, many cars are on their sides because of the derailment. Passengers stood by the tracks, carrying some luggage.

Moreover, the pictures show a sunny sky, and it looks like the accident happened on a straight section side of the tracks.

Megan Vandervest, a passenger on the train who was going to visit a friend in Seattle, said that she was awakened by the derailment. She told the the New York Times that the car behind hers was tilted over, the one behind that was entirely tipped over, and the three cars behind that “had completely fallen off the tracks and were detached from the train”.

She added that it felt like “extreme turbulence on a plane”.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it will send a 14-member team, including investigators and specialists in railway signals and other disciplines, to investigate the Amtrak derailment.
