Apple employee, who was vocal on discrimination gets fired
Oct 18, 2021:
An Apple employee who guided co-workers to publicly share examples of harassment and discrimination in the company says she has been fired.
Janekke Parrish, an Apple program manager in the United States, said the iPhone maker told her Thursday that she had been removed for deleting content on the company’s devices after some town hall information was leaked to the media. Parrish is under investigation for the charge but she denies responsibility for the leak.
Parrish said she deleted apps containing details of its finances and other personal information before handing over her devices to Apple as part of an investigation.
Parrish, who ran for City Council in Round Rock, Texas this year, helped propel the #AppleToo movement, which has led Apple employees to complain about conflicting salaries, lack of transparency and other workplace issues. She says she has been fired for workplace activism.
Apple said Friday it does not discuss employee-specific issues.
Apple has recently experienced other examples of employee unrest. Last month, two Apple employees told Reuters news agency they had filed charges against the company at the National Labor Relations Board. Workers have accused Apple of retaliating and blocking pay disputes between employees.
U.S. law protects employees’ right to speak openly on certain topics, including working conditions, discrimination and equal pay. Apple has said it is “committed to creating and maintaining a positive and inclusive workplace” and that it takes “all employee concerns” seriously.
Parrish said she was careful to respect the company’s rules and never shared information she considered confidential. She said she continued to publish the #AppleToo Digest after being investigated in late September.
“To me, this seems clearly retaliatory for the fact that I was speaking out about abuses that have happened at my employer, pay equity and, generally, about our workplace conditions, if anything, it’s made the importance of that work clearer than ever, when Apple’s response to criticism is to start internal investigations into those that it wants to see gone,” she said.
“It’s easier for them to terminate people than it is for them to actually listen.”
