Ashraf Ghani Agrees to Step Down, New Afghan Interim Chief Announced

Kabul: The Taliban have reportedly entered the outskirts of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul while Ashraf Ghani has agreed to step down. Afghan media has said Ali Ahmed Jalali will be appointed as head of the new interim government.

Reports from Kabul said talks were underway at the Afghan Presidential Palace to transfer power to the Taliban.

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the Afghan Conciliation Council (HCNR), is playing the role of mediator in the case.

Ali Ahmad Jalali is also a former Afghan interior minister and has also served as Afghan ambassador to Germany.

On the other hand, a Taliban official in Doha, Qatar, says Taliban leader Mullah Baradar is preparing to come to Afghanistan.

It should be noted that the Taliban have entered the outskirts of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

Speaking on the occasion, acting Afghan Interior Minister Abdul Sattar Mirzakwa said that an agreement has been reached with the Taliban not to attack Kabul.

In a statement issued to the media, he said that transfer of power to the interim government under the agreement would take place in a peaceful environment.

Afghan officials stated that the behind-the-scenes talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban are underway, saying that the Afghan government does not want bloodshed, and will try to resolve the issue without war. Force will not be used to enter Kabul, the Taliban stated.

Negotiations are underway from the other side so that civilians are not harmed.

The Taliban declared no retaliation, saying we are not taking revenge, all military and civilian personnel will be safe.

Talking to a TV channel, the Taliban spokesman said that a peaceful transfer of power will be negotiated. He also said he wants control of the Afghan capital to be peaceful and will wait even if it takes a few days or weeks.
