KUNAR: At least 19 people were reported dead in an avalanche near Pak-Afghan border while search for other continues. The people were killed while they were trying to cross a remote mountain pass from Afghanistan. 

According to The Guardian, a Taliban official confirmed the news of 19 deaths when people were attempting to cross the mountain pass. “19 bodies have been recovered already,” Najibullah Hassan Abdal, head of information for eastern Kunar province, briefed the media while rescuers are still struggling to search the rest.

Illegal traffic of humans and goods has soared between Pakistan and Afghanistan since Taliban took over, plunging the country into severe crisis. The unemployment rate has also increased since August.

It has been reported that Pakistan is strategically attempting to fence the entire 2,670 kilometre (1,660 mile) frontier, also known as the Durand Line.

Traders and smugglers have also taken advantage of these remote passes to cross the border to avoid paying taxes. Deadly avalanches are also common in the area.

In 2015, more than 250 people were reported dead in a series of devastating avalanches.
