Sept 13, 2021: Britain’s NHS will launch the world’s largest trial on Monday with Grail Inc.’s flagship Galleri blood test, which can detect more than 50 types of cancer before symptoms appear.

The gallery test looks for DNA in a patient’s blood to determine if it came from cancer cells. Early detection of cancer dramatically increases survival rates. The NHS said it wanted to recruit 140,000 volunteers in England to see how well the test worked as part of a randomized controlled trial. Half of the participants’ blood samples will be tested along with the Galleri test right away.

Peter Sasieni, Professor of Cancer Prevention at King’s College London, said: “We need to study the gallery test carefully to see if it can significantly reduce the number of cancers diagnosed at a later stage. ”

“The test could be a gamechanger for early cancer detection and we are excited to be leading this important research. Cancer screening can find cancers earlier, when they are more likely to be treated successfully, but not all types of screening work.”

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK, accounting for one-fifth of all cancer deaths. Lung, bowel, prostate and breast cancers account for 45% of all cancer deaths in the Britain, NHS said.

When a tumor is detected in the early stages, patients usually have more treatment options and are five to 10 times more likely to survive than those in the fourth stage.

The chief executive of Britain’s NHS, Amanda Pritchard, said the quick and simple test “could mark the beginning of a revolution in cancer detection and treatment” and play a major role in the health service’s ambition to catch three-quarters of cancers at an early stage, when they are easier to treat.

Earlier research tumours at stage one to indicated that the Galleri test picked up 67% of a dozen pre-specified cancers that account for about two-thirds of cancer deaths in Britain and the US, and about 41% of all cancers.

U.S. life sciences company Illumina Inc said last month it had completed its $7.1 billion acquisition of Grail. Illumina said it will operate Grail separately from its existing business.
