Cambridge beats San Jose and Oxford to be named as the most intensive science and technology cluster in the world

Cambridge, UK, has once again secured its position as the world’s most intensive science and technology cluster, according to the 2023 Global Innovation Index (GII). This annual report assesses the innovation capabilities of countries and regions and highlights concentrations of global innovation.

In this year’s ranking, Cambridge retained its number one spot for science and technology cluster intensity, with San Jose, San Francisco, in the United States, taking second place and Oxford ranking third. Prof. Deborah Prentice, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “Cambridge is a truly extraordinary place, where leading scientists collaborate with industry and academic partners to generate groundbreaking ideas and create life-changing medicines, technologies, and services. I am thrilled to see it once again recognized as one of the greatest innovation hubs on the planet.”

The Global Innovation Index determines these science and technology clusters by analyzing patent filing activity and scientific article publications, identifying geographical areas with the highest concentrations of inventors and scientific authors.

The complete index is scheduled for release on September 27 and reveals that, per one million inhabitants, the Cambridge cluster has filed 6,582 Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patent applications and published 37,136 scientific articles over the past five years.

This recognition follows an earlier report by London Economics, which indicated that the University of Cambridge contributes nearly £30 billion to the UK’s economy annually and supports over 86,000 jobs nationwide.

Dr Diarmuid O’Brien, chief executive of Cambridge Enterprise, the university’s commercialization arm, said: “It is fantastic to see this continued recognition of Cambridge’s success as the world’s most intensive science and technological cluster. The Cambridge innovation ecosystem is home to a unique and driven community of exceptional science, people, companies and partners, tackling global challenges and changing lives.”
