Cartoonist who drew Prophet's sketches Dies in Car Crash

A Swedish cartoonist who created a controversial sketch of the Prophet of Islam has died in a traffic accident. According to local media, cartoonist Lars Wilkes was allegedly traveling in a simple police car when it collided with a truck near the southern Swedish town of Mercury.

According to the details, Lars Wilkes, 75, was under police protection after the controversial sketch because his life was in danger. Two policemen were also killed in the crash, while a truck driver was reported injured. The cartoon, published in 2007, hurt the feelings of many Muslims around the world because images of the Prophet of Islam are considered blasphemous.

The accident happened a year after the controversial cartoon was published by a Danish newspaper. Police have not released the identities of those killed in Sunday’s incident, but Wilkes’ partner confirmed his death to the DeGeneres newspaper.

A police statement said it was not immediately clear how the car and truck collided, but initially there was no indication that anyone was involved.

It may be recalled that the publication of this cartoon had caused great outrage among the Muslims and the then Prime Minister John Fredrik Reinfeldt had met the ambassadors of 22 Muslim countries in an attempt to handle the situation.

Shortly after its publication, al-Qaeda in Iraq offered a bounty of $100,000 US for the cartoonist’s head. In 2015, Volks participated in a debate on freedom of expression in which he was attacked. He said he was probably the target of the attack, but that a film director had been killed.
