Chairman PEMRA Summoned by Senate Body
Islamabad (18th Oct, 2019): Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Muhammad Saleem Baig, summoned by Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights.
According to reports, Senate body has summoned Chairman PEMRA on the 18th of October. Reportedly, Chairman Committee, Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar has stated through his social media account that PEMRA has requested a response concerning “illegal orders” to not broadcast JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman’s press conference.
Moreover, it has been alleged that the five-point agenda issued by the Senate Secretariat for the meeting, confirms that the committee is set to be headed by Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar of the PPP (Pakistan Peoples Party). It has further been confirmed that they will be receiving preliminary briefing from government officials as well as PEMRA on the issues related to freedom of the media in Pakistan.
The committee members will receive their first briefing by the Secretary of Human Rights Ministry on media freedom, according to the five-point agenda. Additionally, in light of the reports by the international media and human rights organizations, they will further be briefed by PEMRA Chairman, Muhammad Saleem Baig, on the issue of “legality of censorship” related to coverage of interviews and press conferences by the governments’ opposition.
