Chanel Appoints Unilever’s Executive as its New CEO

Baaghi TV: French Luxury Fashion Brand, Chanel appointed Leena Nair, a Unilever consumer goods executive, as its new global CEO, a surprise announcement was made this Tuesday.
Nair, now aged 52, completed a career of 30 years at Unilever , acting at the post of the chief of human resources and also as a member of the company’s executive committee.
Nair, A British national, was born in India and is considered a rare outsider to have taken control of the family fashion house, famous for its fashionable suits, stylish handbags and the glorious No. 5 perfume.
The owner of Chanel, Alain Wertheimer, the French billionaire, along with his brother Gerard Wertheimer had at first taken on the job of CEO on a temporary basis. He will now move on to assume the role of global executive chairman.
The brand was founded in 1910 by fashion legend Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel as a hat boutique on rue Cambon in Paris and grew to become a byword for French chic.
Bernstein luxury goods analyst Luca Solca said Chanel was following a trend of attracting top executives from the consumer packaged goods industry.
“Unilever and P&G stand tall as management reservoirs for the relatively young luxury goods industry,” he said, pointing to Antonio Belloni, general manager of LVMH (LVMH.PA) and a former president of Procter & Gamble in Europe, and Estee Lauder head Fabrizio Freda, also a P&G veteran.
