Lahore, 27th March: According to the experts, the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 cannot be stopped, it is highly contagious and the virus germs last in the air for 8 hours.

However, the health experts are advising to adopt a simple measure in order to slow the spread of the virus by social distancing. The transmission rate of the virus can be reduced by limiting human contact,  the sooner the social distancing measures are introduced, the slower infection rates will be.

The major problem many countries are facing regarding the coronavirus is its exponential growth, SARS-CoV-2 is a new type of virus which has no herd immunity and everyone is a susceptible target to this infection.

This is what we saw in China, and now in Italy, Spain, Europe, and the US, are witnessing the increase in the number of the coronavirus cases rapidly due to its exponential growth and if the growth rate multiplies like this then we will be seeing not hundreds but thousands of people being affected by the COVID-19 in many countries.

Coronavirus: What we need to know

While the experts are agreeing that the coronavirus rate cannot be stopped, it can be slowed down significantly by the measures termed as ‘social distancing’, by keeping a safe distance of at least 2 meters between humans, the spread of the virus can be slowed down.

World Health Organization is stressing upon the need for social distancing and to keep a distance of 1 meter (3 feet) between yourself and the one who is sneezing or coughing. It is being said by WHO, if someone sneezes or coughs, they can release small droplets in the air which can be inhaled by a person nearby. WHO has released a video in order to explain the correct way of maintaining safe distance among humans.

Where institutions such as the WHO is implementing social distancing in their lives and professions, the Pakistani community is not. The global community is preaching the idea of social distancing by showing it among themselves.

It may be noticed, during the press meetings of the World Health Organization a safe distance is kept among the representatives presenting the world a picture, to follow as the health authorities are preaching.

On the other hand, it is seen that during the press conferences and media gatherings in Pakistan, they are still full of people and that too in close contact. Social distancing is being imposed by the government on the public but we are not able to see our leaders following such precautionary steps practically.

It is evident from the image above, how close they are seated, which in such a situation is not advisable by the authorities. As a nation, we are not used to understanding the gravity of a situation and imposing discipline is another weakness. Our beloved Quaid stressed on the fact that we should be disciplined to achieve great heights. As a matter of fact, security and safety are two areas where we are careless and under-educated.

As a culture, we play with fire but this dangerous situation demands the utmost care. Our authorities need to lead by example and show small gestures that emphasize the requirement of safe distance even in routine matters. Press briefings and media gatherings should be cut down and most of the tasks should be carried online or by video conferencing.

If they do not set such an example how can they expect the innocent public to follow suit, and take safety measures?
