Court be told how much benefit was afforded to petroleum companies by jacking up prices: Chief Justice LHC

LAHORE, June 30 (Online): Chief  Justice  Lahore High Court (LHC) Qasim Khan has remarked “ it is learnt when principal secretary speaks then law comes out of his mouth. Let us  talk to him and see. Tell us how much benefit was afforded to petroleum companies by jacking up prices of petroleum products.

Chief Justice LHC gave these remarks during the course of hearing  of petition filed against upswing in the prices of petroleum products here Tuesday.

He made it clear in petrol crisis case whoever including secretary petroleum, principal secretary, chairperson OGRA or any one else is found  involved then all will be cleansed. No one will be able  to escape the law.

Chief Justice LHC while expressing displeasure over non appearance of principal secretary to PM remarked “ it seems from  his non arrival  that some documents are being completed.

Attorney General prayed the court that principal secretary is in the cabinet meeting. Therefore, exemption may please be given to him from attendance.

Chief Justice LHC inquired government has taken what steps to stem such crisis in future. Such a mega crisis of petrol  hit the country, therefore, government should tell what steps were initiated against OGRA.

Chairperson OGRA Uzma Adil said it had become difficult to make imports in the wake of corona virus epidemic. This led to create shortfall of petrol in the control.

The  court remarked government should tell us after making consultation with the speaker of National Assembly as to why a committee comprising government and opposition parliamentarians be not constituted to work out report on petrol crisis, storage and hike in prices of petroleum products. One copy of report be filed each in  the court and parliament.

Chief Justice LHC remarked “ if speaker NA does not  constitute committee then law will take its own course. Second solution can be this court appoints a commission under CPC.

The court directed chairman OGRA to deposit  amount of fine in the hospital of high court bar.

Further proceedings of the case will take place on July 9.
