Riyadh, 13th April: With the outrageous spread of COVID-19 worldwide, the social gatherings and the religious activities have come to a complete halt.

According to reports of Baaghi TV, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced to suspend the congregational prayers during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Muslims are seen to look forward to the Holy month of Ramadan and are very keen on attending five times prayers in the mosques and the additional Taraweeh prayers after the Isha at night. This year Ramadan in Saudia and UAE is falling on the 24th of April.

The prevailing situation due to coronavirus in the Kingdom has forced the authorities to cancel all sorts of the congregational prayers in the mosques where no more than 5 people should be present at one time.

The Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance announced that Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan will only be performed at home as the suspension of prayers at mosques would not be lifted until the end of coronavirus.

Al Riyadh newspaper quoted Dr. Abdul Latif Al Sheikh, Saudi Minister of Islamic Affairs, saying: “The suspension of performing the five daily prayers at mosques is more important than the suspension of Taraweeh prayers. We ask Allah the Almighty to accept Taraweeh prayers whether held at mosques, or homes, which we think is better for people’s health. We ask Allah the Almighty to accept prayers from all of us and protect humanity from this epidemic that hit the entire world,” Al Sheikh clarified.

Similarly, the funeral prayers have also been restricted with only 5 to 6 family members of the deceased attending the funeral, keeping in view the safety measure required during the pandemic. The rest of the family members are advised to pray at home for the departing soul.

Saudia suspends prayers at mosques over coronavirus

According to their health officials, staying safe and healthy is more essential at this time of crisis, than offering prayers in groups in the mosques where the transmission of the disease can get easier. It is, therefore, suggested to perform five times daily prayers and the Taraweeh prayer during Ramadan at home.

It may be noted that around 4,462 have been infected with the virus and 59 people have died so far. The number of patients recovered from COVID-19 is 761. A curfew has been imposed in the Kingdom which has been extended by their government officials.
