Lahore, 18th March: According to the recent reports, the number of healthcare workers, doctors, and nurses affected by the coronavirus is increasing rapidly creating alarm and panic among the people.

Healthcare workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus outbreak are urging hospitals to work with them to reduce the risk of infections among employees as a way to ensure there is enough staff to care for the patients.

In China, more than a thousand healthcare workers were infected with COVID-19 and six of them died.

In California, at least 50 healthcare workers were sent home after coming into contact with infected patients.

The number of healthcare professionals infected with coronavirus in Italy has risen to 2,629, or 8.3% of the total cases, as of March 17, according to a report drafted by the Foundation Gimbe which is based on data of the Superior Health Institute (ISS).

In the US, many doctors and nurses have fallen ill with COVID-19 and many are being quarantined after being exposed to the virus.

In Washington state, more than 20 healthcare workers have reportedly been put under observation after interacting with a patient who died before testing positive for COVID-19.

In Kirkland, Washington, in a nursing home, almost 4 dozen staffers tested positive for coronavirus.

The healthcare staff has been put at risk in the United States not only by the nature of their jobs but by shortages of protective equipment such as N95 face masks and the incompetency of the government in the testing program, which was delayed for weeks while the virus spread around the country undetected.

As the outbreak continues to spread, the risk of infection among healthcare workers rises. The medical staff is the most vulnerable at the risk of catching the pandemic in such times, as they have to deal directly with the patients. Keeping in view their role in such calamity, they should be provided with the best of the protective equipment.
