COVID19: India confirms 400K dead, half in past 2 months

July 2, 2021: India has confirmed 400,000 deaths from COVID-19, half of them in the past two months as the virulent delta variant infected hundreds of thousands daily.
Still, the critical figures announced on Friday are said to be a only a part of the true figure. It is second only to the United States and Brazil. The health ministry said 853 people had died in the last 24 hours since the onset of the epidemic, bringing the death toll to 400,312. The first COVID-19 in India died on March 12 last year in the southern state of Karnataka.
India, a country of about 1.4 billion people, has confirmed more than 30.4 million infections with 46,617 new cases in the last 24 hours. This is also considered a low count. New cases are declining after exceeding 400,000 a day in May. But authorities are preparing for another possible wave of infection around September and are trying to speed up vaccinations. Less than 5% of Indians are fully vaccinated. More than 340m doses have been delivered since mid-January, according to the ministry.
Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday said that the pace of vaccination has increased after the federal government provided 75 per cent free vaccines to the states. With two major suppliers in India, the Serum Institute and Bharat Biotech, approximately 2 billion doses may be available by December, which could lead to increased production and potentially five other vaccines in the coming months.
