Denver mass shooting leaves 5 dead and two wounded
Dec 29, 2021: The death toll from a series of shootings in Denver, Colorado that ended when a gunman shot himself was killed, has risen to 5 police said Tuesday.
Police said the shooting began around 5:00 p.m. Monday and spread to at least four different locations in the cities of Denver and Lakewood, which initially put the death toll at four. In Denver, two women were killed and one was injured, police said, adding that another man was shot dead outside his home.
The gunman then went to neighboring Lakewood, where he shot and killed another man at Lucky 13 Tattoo Parlor and injured another. Acting on information gathered from previous attacks, Lakewood officers were able to identify the shooter as he moved into the area. The shooter entered a shopping center where he shot and killed a female employee, police said.
He was later confronted by a police officer at a shopping center who ordered him to drop his weapon. The officer was later injured in the exchange of fire but the accused was shot dead.
Lakewood Police spokesman John Romero said the gunman was pronounced dead at the scene. He added that the police officer was “doing well” but would need further surgery.
The motive for the shooter was not immediately clear, but police said “based on what we know, the suspect appears to be targeting specific people.” Police recovered two weapons.
