Drama Review: Dunk serial finally comes to an end
The sensational drama serial, Dunk, premiered its final mega episode yesterday night on ARY Digital at 9:00 p.m. The drama was originally released on 23 December 2020 and after more than 7 months, the star-studded drama finally came to an end.
It would be safe to say that the final episode was more than satisfactory and covered all aspects for a perfect conclusion to the whirlwind of events it followed. Writer Mohsin Ali beautifully wrote the dialogues for all the characters in yesterday night’s episode which kept all the viewers hooked to their television screens.
Before the initial release of the serial, the internet was abuzz with anticipation for the project starring Sana Javed alongside Bilal Abbass Khan and Nauman Ijaz. However, after the unfortunate death of Nauman Ijaz’s character, Professor Humayun, the drama seemed to have lost its charm and started to feel a bit dragged.

Yet, the final episode seemed to reawaken that lost interest in its audience, as the next day, #dunk and #sanajaved are trending on number 4 and number 1 respectively on Twitter.
Sana Javed was seen portraying an antagonistic character on screen after a long time, however, her performance was very convincing. Her portrayal of ‘Amal’ was brilliant, as she was able to make the viewers utterly loathe her by the end.
Bilal Abbas too played his character competently and was able to maintain the strong aura of Haider by his body language more so than his dialogues. Although we had hoped that ‘Haider’ would have spoken more often in the drama, his expressions in every scene were very powerful and precise.
Yasra Rizvi’s simple yet outstanding portrayal of ‘Saira’ was a major uplifting factor for the serial. Everything about her character; her struggle, perseverance, strength, and faith, was beautifully performed by Yasra Rizvi. Every scene with her daughter was heartwarming yet at the same time heart-wrenching, as the pain behind her affectionate gestures towards her daughter could be seen. Her final monologue in court was eloquently delivered which left the audience with goosebumps.

The character development for each major and minor character of the drama was phenomenal, as we saw various stages and layers being revealed for each of them. Azekah Daniel’s character, Minaal, and Fahad Sheikh’s character, Safeer, although both important in people in the play, failed to impress us with their actions for their major dialogues did not leave the audience invested in the scene.
Moreover, Shahood Alvi’s character Nawaz, the father of Haider, was not as refined as it should have been, his role despite appearing to be very significant in the serial, did not have much of an impact. Likewise, the character Aapa Bi, portrayed by Gul-e-Rana, seemed to be of no apparent significance and the play could have done without her as well.

On the other hand, Saife Hassan proved himself to be rightfully called a legend once again through his exceptional performance in this drama serial. Especially his expressions and dialogue delivery during his final scenes left the audience sympathizing with him, for they could imagine the betrayal he felt like a loving father, and so they shared his agony with him.
Despite such a promising start and satisfying end, we did feel that the play was a bit dragged in the middle. If this end had come to a couple of episodes earlier and the drama hadn’t lingered on for 31 episodes, it would surely have been a more successful project than what it is now.
